My Notes: Collage animation tutorial AE After Effects

First, I painted the characters. It helps to plan what you want to animate so you can paint each part separately.

Next, I photographed the painting with neutral, even lighting and imported it into Photoshop. I separated each part into its own layer and masked them out. Sometimes you need to extend areas that overlap and patch them up, which is why painting parts separately makes it easier.

Once everything was ready, I brought it into After Effects to start animating. I adjusted the rotation and position for natural body movements. I used Puppet Pins for flexibility and the Hair Rig plugin to make the fabric flow. I also adjusted the speed graph to make the motion feel more natural.

To track it onto the book page, I went to the Tracker panel, selected Track Motion, and used Perspective Corner Pin to align it to the four corners. It helps if the corners you are tracking have strong contrast so the software can follow them smoothly.

After tracking, I added a solid layer, set it as the target in the Tracker panel, and applied the tracking data. Then I pre-composed the solid, opened it, and placed my animation inside. Finally, I adjusted the blending modes so the animation matched the paper’s texture and lighting.

Save this video for later maybe and I hope this inspires you to create something too. Tag me if you do!!!
