My Notes: Bookend storytelling technique
Bookends in cinema create a sense of cohesion, reinforcing themes or character arcs by mirroring imagery, dialogue, or situations at the beginning and end of a film. They can highlight change or stagnation, making the audience reflect on the journey in between. Sometimes, the opening and closing moments are nearly identical, emphasizing cyclical narratives or the inevitability of fate. Other times, they contrast sharply, showcasing growth, loss, or transformation. When done well, bookends add a layer of storytelling that lingers, making the ending feel earned rather than just arrived at. Big shoutout to YouTube channel Cineflect for inspiration for this post.
